[Tuesday was the 7th February 1933]extract from the "History of the Church and Parish of St Ignatius,
Preston 1833-1933" by Anthony Holden:"Another well-known figure passed away on Candlemas Day in the person of
Mr Thomas Swarbrick, of St Ignatius Square, in his seventy-third year. He
was a paper merchant and printer and he enjoyed a wide circle of personal
and business friends. The large attendance at the Requiem Mass on
Tuesday, February 7th, testified to the regard in which he was held. He
was a very devout man, and was to be seen daily in his place in front of
St Joseph's chapel at one or other of the early Masses. Often he was
called upon to serve an extra Mass when some little altar boy failed to
put in an appearance."A good family man, Mr Swarbrick left a widow and three sons to mourn his
loss. His eldest son, William, a young schoolmaster of much promise, was
killed in the War."[Actually William died of the long term effects of trench fever in
September of 1920].

PRESENTATION TO A GWR INSPECTOR
The Great Western Force has recently lost by retirement one of its
most respected officers in the person of Det. Inspr. Slade of
Taunton who has served the Force well for a period of forty years. To mark their esteem towards Inspr. Slade the Great Western
Divisional and District officers met in good numbers at their
conference at Bristol on March 4th, when the occasion was considered
suitable to entertain Inspr. Slade and to present him and Mrs Slade
with tokens as a practical expression of good will. The Great Western Chief, Mr Matthews, presided and was supported by
Mr Stephens. After enjoying a good repast, Mr Matthews, in his own
way, presented Inspr. Slade with an arm chair and walking stick. An
arm chair was also presented to Mrs Slade. In the course of his
remarks Mr Matthews referred to the good service rendered to the
Police Department by Inspr. Slade and recommended his devotion to
duty as an example everyone may safely follow.Mr Stephens also paid a tribute to Inspr. Slade's high
qualifications and his unfailing conscientious service to the Great
Western Company. All officers present testified to the high standard of life shown by
Inspr. Slade who was always true to his principles. He had left the
Great Western service reigning high in the estimation of his fellow
officers.Inspr. Slade suitably responded, and referred to his experiences in
the Department, which proved very interesting.
