Inspr. Slade of 2 CONT Taunton who has served the Force well for a period of forty years. 2 CONT 2 CONT To mark their esteem towards Inspr. Slade the Great Western 2 CONT Divisional and District officers met in good numbers at their 2 CONT conference at Bristol on March 4th, when the occasion was considered 2 CONT suitable to entertain Inspr. Slade and to present him and Mrs Slade 2 CONT with tokens as a practical expression of good will. 2 CONT 2 CONT The Great Western Chief, Mr Matthews, presided and was supported by 2 CONT Mr Stephens. After enjoying a good repast, Mr Matthews, in his own 2 CONT way, presented Inspr. Slade with an arm chair and walking stick. An 2 CONT arm chair was also presented to Mrs Slade. In the course of his 2 CONT remarks Mr Matthews referred to the good service rendered to the 2 CONT Police Department by Inspr. Slade and recommended his devotion to 2 CONT duty as an example everyone may safely follow. 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr Stephens also paid a tribute to Inspr. Slade's high 2 CONT qualifications and his unfailing conscientious service to the Great 2 CONT Western Company. 2 CONT 2 CONT All officers present testified to the high standard of life shown by 2 CONT Inspr. SLADE 2 CONT 2 CONT FORMER GWR DETECTIVE 2 CONT 2 CONT Mr Benjamin Slade [74] a former detective inspector in the Special 2 CONT Police Department of the Great Western Railway, died at his 2 CONT residence 27 Portland-street, Taunton, on Monday after a long 2 CONT illness. 2 CONT 2 CONT Deceased was a native of Bremhill, Wiltshire. In 1882 he joined the 2 CONT GWR as a uniformed constable at Bristol, and rose to the rank of 2 CONT detective inspector before he came to Taunton in 1916. He was six 2 CONT years in the town and then retired on pension. His wife died two 2 CONT years ago. His son, Mr E. Slade, is a sergeant attached to the GWR 2 CONT Police Department in London. 2 CONT 2 CONT FUNERAL TRIBUTES 2 CONT 2 CONT Representatives of the GWR Police attended the funeral at St Mary's 2 CONT Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. It appears that deceased was last seen alive at 11 pm on 2 CONT Friday when he retired to bed apparently in his usual health but a 2 CONT little forward in drink. At 3.30 the following morning his son, aged 2 CONT three years, awakened his mother by calling loudly "Oh daddy". Mrs 2 CONT McCarthy got up and found her husband hanging by the neck from the 2 CONT bed post. She raised an alarm but although assistance was quickly 2 CONT forthcoming life was extinct when the handkerchief, by which he was 2 CONT attached to the post, was cut.
