2 CONT The Great Western Force has recently lost by retirement one of its
2 CONT most respected officers in the person of Det. Inspr. Slade of
2 CONT Taunton who has served the Force well for a period of forty years.

2 CONT To mark their esteem towards Inspr. Slade the Great Western
2 CONT Divisional and District officers met in good numbers at their
2 CONT conference at Bristol on March 4th, when the occasion was considered
2 CONT suitable to entertain Inspr. Slade and to present him and Mrs Slade
2 CONT with tokens as a practical expression of good will.
2 CONT 
2 CONT The Great Western Chief, Mr Matthews, presided and was supported by
2 CONT Mr Stephens. After enjoying a good repast, Mr Matthews, in his own
2 CONT way, presented Inspr. Slade with an arm chair and walking stick. An
2 CONT arm chair was also presented to Mrs Slade. In the course of his
2 CONT remarks Mr Matthews referred to the good service rendered to the
2 CONT Police Department by Inspr. Slade and recommended his devotion to
2 CONT duty as an example everyone may safely follow.

2 CONT Mr Stephens also paid a tribute to Inspr. Slade's high
2 CONT qualifications and his unfailing conscientious service to the Great
2 CONT Western Company.

2 CONT All officers present testified to the high standard of life shown by
2 CONT Inspr. Slade who was always true to his principles. He had left the
2 CONT Great Western service reigning high in the estimation of his fellow
2 CONT officers.

2 CONT Mr Benjamin Slade [74] a former detective inspector in the Special
2 CONT Police Department of the Great Western Railway, died at his
2 CONT residence 27 Portland-street, Taunton, on Monday after a long
2 CONT illness.
2 CONT 
2 CONT Deceased was a native of Bremhill, Wiltshire. In 1882 he joined the
2 CONT GWR as a uniformed constable at Bristol, and rose to the rank of
2 CONT detective inspector before he came to Taunton in 1916. He was six
2 CONT years in the town and then retired on pension. His wife died two
2 CONT years ago. His son, Mr E. Slade, is a sergeant attached to the GWR
2 CONT Police Department in London.

2 CONT FUNERAL TRIBUTES

2 CONT Representatives of the GWR Police attended the funeral at St Mary's
2 CONT Cemetery on Thursday afternoon. They were Divisional Inspector

2 CONT Mary's Rev. E.J. Chereton officiated.

2 CONT Who on his oath saith he is about thirty three years of age and was
2 CONT born in the Parish of Sherston aforesaid. Saith by what he hath been
2 CONT informed his Father William Lydiard about thirty two years ago went
2 CONT away from Sherston aforesaid where he left his Wife and Family, and
2 CONT that his Father went to some part in London where he cohabited with
2 CONT another woman. Saith about twenty years ago his Mother as he hath
2 CONT been informed went some where below Bristol where she hired herself
2 CONT as Dairy Maid to one Mr Coombs. Saith after his Mother leaving him
2 CONT he went and lived with his uncle Francis Neale at the sign of The
2 CONT Ship at Luckington in the said parish of Sherston where he continued
2 CONT for about three years without any hiring whatsoever. Saith
2 CONT afterwards he went to London where he served divers masters in the
2 CONT butchering line but never hired himself to any one for a year.
2 CONT Further saith he hath not done any other act so as to gain a
2 CONT settlement otherwise that as above.

2 CONT sound and perfect mind and memory, blessed be Almighty God for the
2 CONT same, do make and publish this my Last Will and Testament in manner
2 CONT and form following [that is to say]

2 CONT First, I give and devise to my Dear Wife Mary Berry the two
2 CONT tenements with their appurtenances: situate in the centre of the
2 CONT town of Sherston Magna aforesaid [Free Land]. Now in the occupation
2 CONT of Thomas Berry and Wm Berry for her life, and after her decease I
2 CONT give and bequeath the front dwelling house in the centre of the town
2 CONT unto my son Cyrenus Saml. Berry and his heirs for ever, and also the

2 CONT "DETERMINED SUICIDE OF A CHORLEY MAN

2 CONT "The Preston Coroner today received information of the death of
2 CONT Robert McCarthy 47 weaver 21 Townley-street Chorley who was found
2 CONT hanging by the neck from a bed post at Chorley at 3.30 am on
2 CONT Saturday. It appears that deceased was last seen alive at 11 pm on
2 CONT Friday when he retired to bed apparently in his usual health but a
2 CONT little forward in drink. At 3.30 the following morning his son, aged
2 CONT three years, awakened his mother by calling loudly "Oh daddy". Mrs
2 CONT McCarthy got up and found her husband hanging by the neck from the
2 CONT bed post. She raised an alarm but although assistance was quickly
2 CONT forthcoming life was extinct when the handkerchief, by which he was
2 CONT attached to the post, was cut. Several times whilst in drink
2 CONT deceased has threatened to end his life by 'jumping in the cut' "

2 CONT Robert's three year old son was John McCarthy, born on 1st February
